Interior Minister Henry Quartey has issued a strong warning to immigration officials stationed at Kotoka International Airport (KIA), cautioning that any staff found assisting visitors would face immediate suspension from duty.
The minister delivered this message during a recent visit to the Ghana Immigration Service (GIS) headquarters in Accra.
Quartey emphasized the seriousness of such misconduct, labeling it as unprofessional, and urged officers to refrain from engaging in such actions.
He highlighted instances where officers wearing uniforms were seen assisting friends at the airport, even going as far as aiding them through immigration and security checkpoints.
The Minister instructed the GIS to take immediate action to stop such behavior, indicating that plainclothes officers would be deployed to monitor the situation.
He warned that any immigration officer found assisting passengers would face extended suspension from duty, emphasizing that this directive came directly from him.
In addition to addressing the issue of misconduct at KIA, Quartey urged GIS officers to uphold professionalism, especially with the upcoming 2024 general elections in mind.
He stressed the importance of the GIS’s role in ensuring unbiased, free, and fair elections and discouraged officers from engaging in political activities.
Furthermore, the Minister emphasized the necessity for officers to maintain strict border control to prevent the illegal entry of undocumented individuals, highlighting the importance of safeguarding the country’s borders.
