Abraham Koomson Warns of EC’s Actions, Calls Supreme Court Rulings Diversion of Attention

Ghana Federation of Labour (GFL) Secretary-General, Abraham Koomson, has expressed concern over the Supreme Court’s back-and-forth rulings on the four vacant parliamentary seats, calling it a distraction from more pressing issues surrounding the Electoral Commission (EC) ahead of the 2024 elections.

He argued that the EC’s recent activities raise serious concerns about potential election rigging, which he believes should be the main focus.

In an interview on Ahotor FM’s Yepe Ahunu with Nana Dogbe, Mr. Koomson questioned the EC’s ongoing recruitment drive, suggesting it could be part of a larger strategy to manipulate the upcoming elections.

He urged Ghanaians, especially the National Democratic Congress (NDC), to stay vigilant, asserting that the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) would struggle to secure even 30% of the vote in a fair election.

“If the election is free and fair, the NPP won’t reach 30%,” he insisted.

Abraham Koomson also alleged that certain institutions are acting under the influence of President Akufo-Addo, who he likened to a modern-day “pharaoh,” claiming that some leaders feel compelled to serve his interests.

He added that while the Supreme Court has made a ruling on the parliamentary seats, the final decision rests with Speaker of Parliament Alban Sumana Bagbin.

Should the Speaker be pressured to recall Parliament, Mr. Koomson suggested that the NDC should consider a parliamentary boycott.

Rejecting accusations that Speaker Bagbin is biased toward the NDC, he pointed out that Alban Bagbin has often supported the NPP’s initiatives in the past, citing the approval of Fisheries Minister Hawa Koomson despite her controversial qualifications.

Abraham Koomson also commented on public trust in the judiciary, which he believes has deteriorated following revelations of corruption through investigative journalist Anas Aremeyaw Anas’ exposé.

He reminded Ghanaians of the importance of focusing on the EC’s actions over the Supreme Court’s rulings, as they directly impact the election’s integrity.
