Ghana will wrap up its disastrous AFCON2025 qualifiers on Monday against Niger at the Accra Sports Stadium at 16:00GMT.
It was a saddening end to Ghana’s dreams of reaching the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations as they were held to a 1-1 draw by Angola when the two sides squared off at the Estadio 11 de Novembro on Friday, making the Black Stars miss out of the continent showpiece for the first time in 20 years when they failed to secure a place in Tunisia.
Ace Jordan Ayew put Ghana in front with a wonderful freekick in the 18th minute to sustain Ghana’s dim hopes of qualification but Angola hit back in the 64th minute through substitute Zini for a share of the spoils to dash the hearts of the two-time African champions.
Ghana after five rounds of matches has just three points and netted twice with no single win languishing at the very bottom of Group F.
Leicester City duo Abdul Fatawu Issahaku and Jordan Ayew all picked up injuries against Angola on Thursday and they have already returned to their club side.
A spirited Niger put up a scintillating show on Thursday against second-placed Sudan by scoring four unanswered goals past their opponent, courtesy goals from Youssouf Oumarou, Ousseni Badamassi and a first-half brace from Kryvbas forward Daniel Sosah to inspire the Mena to a comfortable victory as they kept their slim qualification hopes alive.
Niger had failed to win any of their last four games in Group F, recording just one draw and losing three, including back-to-back defeats at the hands of Angola in October’s double-header.
Despite missing out on the AFCON in Morocco next year, Ghana is hoping to stage a display for pride to consolidate its thirteen (13) unbeaten of the last 15 outings involving Niger, claiming 11 wins and two draws since February 1969.
