On Wednesday, March 20, 2024, the world received the heartbreaking news of the passing of George Darko, a renowned Highlife musician from Ghana. While the cause of his death is yet to be disclosed, his departure is felt deeply, especially after the recent loss of another veteran Highlife artist, KK Kabobo.

Hailing from Akropong in the Eastern Region of Ghana, Darko was a gifted guitarist and vocalist who revolutionized Highlife music with his exceptional talent since the early 1980s.

He began his musical journey as a traditional dancer and drummer in his youth. However, he discovered his passion for guitar after meeting a teacher who crafted his own instrument.

Darko’s music was influenced by the Western bands such as The Beatles, Rolling Stones, and Jimi Hendrix, and he infused contemporary sensibilities into the rich collection of Highlife sounds. His debut solo cassette, The Reborn Avengers, showcased his innovative guitar techniques and quickly gained recognition.

Darko later became a pivotal member of the Bus Stop Band while in Germany, where he emerged as the lead vocalist and contributed significantly to the group’s success.

After the band’s dissolution in 1988, Darko embarked on a solo career that captured audiences with his electrifying performances.

Akoo Te Brofo, one of his seminal works, remains a timeless masterpiece, and other hit songs from Darko include Obi Abayewa, Odo Colour, Highlife Time, and Medo Menuanom.

His contributions have been immortalized in compilations such as the revered Kings of Highlife album. Additionally, Darko was also the Tufuhene of Akropong, with the stool name Nana Apem Darko I. His passing is a significant loss to the world of music, but his legacy will continue to inspire and influence generations to come.
