ER: Nankese Ada M/A Primary School students study in poor conditions.
Students at Nankese Ada M/A Primary School, situated in the Suhum Municipality of the Eastern Region, have been enduring substandard learning conditions for several years.
The deteriorating building they study in not only jeopardizes their safety but also hampers their academic pursuits. Consequently, many parents hesitate to enroll their children, fearing for their well-being.
Some opt to keep their children at home, while others endure long daily commutes to attend schools located outside the Ada community.
Teachers assigned to the school face challenges as well. They are often forced to dismiss classes prematurely, particularly when inclement weather looms due to the precarious structure.
Additionally, the lack of teacher accommodations in the community results in lengthy daily commutes for educators from Nankese and Suhum. Understandably, some teachers feel demotivated by the poor state of the school building.
Eric Nyarko, a correspondent for Ahotor FM News, visited the community and spoke with students who shared their struggles with encountering reptiles during their journey to and from school, as well as during class time. Moreover, they lamented the additional effort required to maintain cleanliness due to frequent littering by animals, which leaves them fatigued even before classes commence, adversely affecting their learning experience.
In light of these challenges, the students earnestly appeal to the government for assistance. They seek essential resources such as textbooks and advocate for the recruitment of additional teachers to improve their educational prospects.
Hon. Ahuah Emmanuel Ada, the Assembly Member for Nankese Amanfrom Electoral Area, expressed disappointment over an unfulfilled promise to construct the school. From kindergarten to sixth grade, the school’s infrastructure is in a state of disrepair, with dusty floors and outdated roofing that leaves teachers and students vulnerable to adverse weather conditions and potential infections.
Furthermore, the absence of a computer lab and computers for ICT lessons is a significant impediment to the students’ education. Despite this, they are still expected to sit for examinations in the subject.
The community’s plea is straightforward: they urge the government to intervene and fulfill the long-awaited completion of the school building.
