Anti corruption crusader and a former Director of the Ghana Integrity Initiative, Vitus Azeem, has added his voice to the call by the National Democratic Congress for the prosecution of persons responsible for one of the most scathing scandals in the history of this country. The NDC in a press conference on monday called for probe and subsequent prosecution of persons involved in the infamous PDS scandal.
The former GII boss indicated that, the NDC must not sit down to come into government before taking up the matter, he revealed that Parliament as an institution can call for a probe into matter by subjecting the sector minister for critical scrutiny to elicit all the necessary answers required to address numerous doubts on the minds of Ghanaians on the PDS scandal that’s if government decides not to act through the AG.
He also cautioned against over politicization of matters of corruption. According him, doing partisan politics with issues of corruption will only create an escape window for culprits to dodge punishment, he therefore called on various stakeholders including civil society organisations to be actively involved in a pursuit of a corruption free society.
Mr. Azeem’s reaction came at the back of a press conference organised by the NDC as part of the party’s weekly press briefings, the National communications officer of the party, Sammy Gyamfi called for the prosecution of persons behind the PDS scandal and also warned that if the Akuffo Addo led government fails to act, the next NDC administration will commit to full investigations and a possible prosecution of culprits involved in the shady takeover of Ghana Electricity Company by PDS.
Reacting to any possible future prosecution by the next NDC government, Mr. Viatus Azeem told Kofi Citizen on Ahotor 92.3 fm morning show, the NDC should not wait to come to power before taking action on the matter, according him people will see that as “mere statements for votes” he advised, the party in opposition can go beyond just press conferences and organise mass demonstrations across the country to protest against corruption in government. He revealed that despite the COVID19 pandemic, demonstrations and protestations have been seen across the world and Ghana can do same and still observe social distancing protocols.
