Dr. Anthony Sorkpah, Communications Officer for NDC Insight, stated, “The Supreme Court appears to be playing political games rather than upholding the Constitution’s values. The judiciary has overstepped its boundaries, and such actions are detrimental to the legal framework of our nation.”
NDC Insight emphasizes that Article 971(g) of the Constitution is straightforward and should be interpreted as such. “If the Supreme Court has a different interpretation of such clear language, then perhaps they should consider rewriting the Constitution in a manner that reflects their understanding,” Dr. Sorkpah remarked. “The current interpretation seems to favor political agendas rather than the principles of justice.”

NDC Insight Condemns Supreme Court for Partisan Politics Over Constitutional Integrity
Accra, Ghana – November 18, 2024 – NDC Insight is dismayed by the recent actions of the Supreme Court, particularly the Chief Justice’s decision to overturn the declaration of four parliamentary seats as vacant. This alarming move not only undermines the rule of law but also raises serious concerns about the integrity and impartiality of our judiciary.
Dr. Anthony Sorkpah, Communications Officer for NDC Insight, stated, “The Supreme Court appears to be playing political games rather than upholding the Constitution’s values. The judiciary has overstepped its boundaries, and such actions are detrimental to the legal framework of our nation.”
It is particularly concerning that this decision comes from a Chief Justice who has a known affiliation with the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP). Dr. Sorkpah continued, “This raises the question: is she serving the interests of Ghana or merely executing the bidding of her party? This blatant disregard for impartiality is unacceptable and must be condemned by all Ghanaians.”
The organization further asserts that the roles of Parliament and the judiciary are distinct and designed to provide checks and balances within our government. The Supreme Court’s recent actions not only undermine the integrity of our Constitution but also hold the nation hostage, delaying crucial government business.
NDC Insight stands firmly behind the Speaker of Parliament, asserting that the Speaker’s authority in presiding over parliamentary matters is legitimate and should be respected. “The Speaker is a seasoned lawyer who understands the Constitution better than a former party organizer now serving as Chief Justice,” Dr. Sorkpah added.
“We call on the Supreme Court to rescind its declaration immediately to allow Parliament to resume its essential work for the people of Ghana. The integrity of our institutions must be preserved, and our Constitution must be respected as it stands—without partisan manipulation.”
