Standard Chartered Africa, Middle East HR boss holds mentorship session for girls

The Regional Head of HR for Africa and Middle East (AME) at Standard Chartered, Millicent Clarke has held an interactive mentorship session with some young women as part of the bank’s policy of nurturing and growing talent.

Mrs. Clarke, who is in town on a routine business visit to Ghana, engaged a number of young women who are part of Vital Voices, an NGO that links young women to mentors to assist in their career development.

Speaking at the mentorship session, Mrs. Clarke urged the mentees to be ambitious about their careers and take deliberate actions that lead towards their goals. Recounting her career journey, she told the girls it is important that they never allow whatever failures they encounter to define who they are.

“When it comes to failure, they are bound to happen. What you have to do is, never allow a failure or setback to define your future. You must make a deliberate effort to overcome the failure as there is always a breakthrough after the initial setback,” she told the young mentees.

The mentorship session forms part of the bank’s broad objective of nurturing talent and making them useful to their various organisations via its “learn, earn and grow” Future Makers programme.

Mrs. Clarke said it was important the young women take advantage of mentorship opportunities like the one offered through Vital Voices as it could prove crucial in their personal development.
