President of the African Editors Forum (TAEF), Mr. Churchill Otieno, has demanded a fair salary and compensation package for African journalists, highlighting their exposure to varied dangers in pursuit of information dissemination.
Speaking at the 3rd African Media Convention in Accra, he criticized media owners for exploiting journalists while big tech platforms profit.
“Fair compensation is crucial for journalists’ dignity and livelihoods. Media organizations must adopt equitable revenue-sharing and copyright reforms to ensure journalists are adequately rewarded,” Otieno emphasized.
He urged media owners to implement fair compensation mechanisms and called on governments to make data accessible and affordable. Otieno emphasized the need for journalists to harness innovation and technology and hold governments accountable.
In contrast, President of the Ghana Journalists Association (GJA), Albert Kwabena Dwumfour commended government’s support but acknowledged ongoing challenges, especially during elections.
He stressed the need for protecting journalists and ensuring credible election coverage.
Information Minister Designate, Fatimatu Abubakar, touted government training programs but faced criticism for inadequate action against attacks on journalists.
She called for severe punishment for those silencing the press, emphasizing accountability and justice.
