Ghana’s Chief of Staff Madam Akosua Frema Osei Opare has called on the media and stakeholders to address the climate change crisis in Africa.
Speaking at the opening ceremony of the 3rd African Media Convention in Accra on May 16, 2024, she emphasized the urgent need for action given Africa’s harsh climate conditions.
“The theme for this Convention, ‘Enhancing Freedom, Innovation, and Environmental Sustainability in a Dynamic Media Landscape,’ is timely for African media to discuss their role in combating climate change and environmental crises. Journalists play a crucial role in countering false narratives with accurate and objective reporting,” she stated.
Madam Opare highlighted research indicating that climate change could impact Africa more severely than slavery and colonialism, underscoring the media’s responsibility in this fight. She also called for the protection of journalists who report on environmental issues and reiterated the government’s commitment to press freedom.
“I urge strengthening collaboration between media organizations, civil society, governments, and international bodies to promote press freedom and sustainability of media practice in Africa. We must also raise awareness of the threats faced by journalists reporting on the environment,” she added.
The 3-day 3rd African Media Convention, which began on May 15, will conclude on May 17 with President Akufo-Addo attending and a special dinner for foreign guests.
