The minority in parliament has urged Vice President and New Patriotic Party (NPP) flagbearer, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, to address the Anti-LGBTQI+ Bill, mirroring the stance taken by National Democratic Congress (NDC) flagbearer, John Dramani Mahama.
Among those advocating for a strong stance is Professor Alidu Seidu, Head of the Political Science Department at the University of Ghana, who has called upon President Akufo-Addo to resist international pressure and sign the Human Sexual Rights and Family Values Bill into law. This bill, passed by Parliament on February 28, 2024, prohibits LGBT activities and criminalizes their promotion, advocacy, and funding.
Professor Seidu stressed the importance of prioritizing national interests and preserving Ghana’s cultural values, which traditionally oppose same-sex relationships. He highlighted the influence of LGBTQ lobbyists in America and Europe, emphasizing the significant pressure they exert on their governments to impose such attitudes and behaviors on other nations.
Member of Parliament for Bole-Bamboi, Yusif Sulemana, speaking to Ahotor news, called on Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia to clarify his position on the matter.
