It will be appropriate if the government of Ghana can work out a system for the affected community through the Volta River Spillage relief package of deferring of payment of electricity and water bills for some time to help the people some briefing space to reorganise their business and lives after the disaster.
Looking back and reflecting through the challenges and pain the people of South Tongu gone through from the of October where countless communities lost properties and investments and are still going through healing process have to be commended.
It’s on record that for the past 50 years ago the towns and communities in the lower tributaries of the Volt River has never experience any catastrophe through flooding and viable land along the river banks has been develop into business enclaves were destroy through the Volta River flood spillage.
The Member of Parliament for South Tongu Hon. Wisdom Kobena Woyome, said this on the Simpieso political talk show on Ahotor 92.3 FM hosted by Emmanuel Amartey (Alaska De Don) in Accra.
Recounting the fatalities he said the money allocated as a relief package for settlement and rehabilitation in the 2024 budget is nothing to drive home. However the sense of bondage the members of the community has shown each family and others to coexist and live as one family in managing their losses and pain is very encouraging.
He is of the view that, Ghanaians, individuals and corporate Ghana have done very well to show love and support during the difficult times to his constituents. Though there are some major challenges to address, such as rebuilding of the community government support is not forth coming in this direction.
He further congratulated the health team and other business men who helped to fumigate the polluted water and provision of other essential services to the communities.
Hon. Wisdom Kobena Woyome, said the support system from his office for umbrella trades men to venture into small scale business has grown in the constituency among the youths who are in needs of ready job.
Touching on education, he said a lot of schools has benefited from school infrastructural projects in the area and while under health the National Democratic Congress has initiate a project to provide good safe drinking water for the community which has suffered in the past through water born disease in some of the catchment area.
Touching on the 2024 budget he is of the view that, the NDC members of parliament have fight for the voice less in the country, but then the government has done what they can but he believes the government does not feel for the plight of Ghanaians with a lot tax components in the 2024 budget is likely going to make cost of living very high going into the new year.
