(AUDIO): ASHANTI REGIONAL GUTA IS SCHEDULED TO MEET COMMISSIONER GENERAL OF CUSTOM DIVISION TODAY OVER ITS PLANNED DEMONSTRATION

Ghana Union of Traders Association GUTA in the Ashanti region is scheduled to meet the Commissioner General of the Customs Division of the Ghana Revenue Authority GRA today as part of the preparation for its planned demonstration.

The group had previously given a 2-week ultimatum to the government and the customs division of the GRA to address what they consider ongoing discrimination and intimidation by customs officials.
Members of GUTA in the Ashanti region threatened to stage a massive demonstration over what they described as ongoing discrimination and intimidation by officials of the Customs Division of GRA.

The aggrieved members said they are compelled to pay additional charges at various checkpoints while transporting their goods to the Ashanti region after clearing them from the port.

The Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA) has dismissed allegations of harassment and extortion leveled against its officials by some members of the Ghana Union of Traders Association (GUTA) and Traders Advocacy Group Ghana (TAGG).

GRA in a statement clarified that careful inspections of goods for which GUTA is complaining is to curtail smuggling, under declaration, mix-description, and concealment of goods thereby ensuring that the right amount of duties and taxes are paid by importers.

The Ashanti regional chairman of the Ghana Union of Traders Association GUTA Anthony Oppong shared some insight ahead of the meeting.
