The team for Deontay Wilder is hopeful that a contract can be reached for a major matchup with Anthony Joshua.
After defeating Robert Helenius in the seventh round on Saturday, the British heavyweight expects to face Bronze Bomber next.
In October of last year, American Wilder also overcame Helenius, who was 39 years old. Joshua, a former heavyweight world champion who has won the title twice, plans to challenge Wilder in Saudi Arabia in January 2019.
Shelly Finkel, Wilder’s manager, told Sky Sports that she was hopeful that an agreement could be reached for Deontay to face Joshua in the first half of 2024. According to Deontay Wilder’s head coach, Malik Scott, Anthony Joshua’s knockout victory over Robert Helenius was ‘required’ in the run-up to their conceivable January super fight in Saudi Arabia.
With a powerful right hand in the seventh round, Joshua defeated Helenius. Although their Middle Eastern fight has not yet been finalized, Joshua is anticipated to face Wilder next.
Even though Wilder’s camp is more than certain to win, Scott added that he and the Bronze Bomber are happy that AJ won his victory because it raises the stakes for their fight.
‘He [Wilder] was like ‘We needed that’. We both said the same thing because at first, it was looking like it was getting ready to go the distance,’ he told the October Red YouTube channel.
‘So when the knockout came I called him on FaceTime and he was like,
‘I’m glad he got that, we needed it done just like that.’
“So we’re both happy, and the knockout makes the fight bigger to me than it was,” I said. “Shout out to AJ for going out there and doing the job.”
