The December 7, 2024 Presidential and Parliamentary campaigns have been characterised by numerous promises by the various candidates. The latest to stir the airwaves is the pledge by Vice Presidential candidate for the Convention people’s Party (CPP), Wayoe Ghanamannti, who has stated that the next CPP government will not arrest smokers of marijuana.
During a manifesto launch in Accra ahead of the December 2024 general elections, Wayoe Ghanamannti maintained that there is a need to bring the spirit of the founder of the CPP and Ghana’s first democratically elected President, Dr. Kwame Nkrumah.
According to him, the youth of Ghana has to rise up to embrace the new changes that the CPP seeks to bring into the political space.
Addressing the patrons at the manifesto launch, Wayoe Ghanamannti said, “I am trying to prove to you that I am a man of action. The youth of this country must rise up and follow the man of action. And the action is to go back and bring the spirit of Kwame Nkrumah back to govern this country through our leader.
He further stated that, as a long practicing lawyer, he will make sure that, he bars the police service form harassing marijuana smokers in their “ghetto” bases as well as persons in possession of “ganja”.
“One thing I want to assure the veranda boys in this country is that, as lawyer, when CPP comes to power, we won’t allow the police to go into the ghettos to arrest anyone. Kwame Nkrumah worked effectively with the veranda boys and that is what we seek to do in the CPP.
“Our position is that if you arrest someone in possession of ganja, arresting the person’s is not reasonable. Rather, take the person to the farms to work for Ghana. That is a reasonable incarceration, instead of sentencing them to ten years in prison.”
