Agbogbomefia of the Asogli State, Togbe Afede XIV, has unleashed scathing criticism of Ghana’s judiciary, condemning recent rulings as illogical and uninspiring. His remarks, delivered at the 9th Congregation of Ensign Global College in Kpong, reflect growing frustration with the judiciary’s perceived partisanship and disregard for fairness.
Echoing concerns raised by retired Supreme Court Justice William Atuguba, Togbe Afede lambasted the Supreme Court’s ruling that overturned Speaker Alban Bagbin’s decision to declare four parliamentary seats vacant. Justice Atuguba had earlier described the decision as “predictable” due to the makeup of the panel—a sentiment Togbe Afede did not shy away from amplifying.
“It is deeply troubling that a former Supreme Court justice can openly state that the judiciary has become predictable. Unfortunately, that observation is justified. Many recent decisions by the judiciary defy logic and fail to inspire confidence,” Togbe Afede stated sharply.
He accused the judiciary of failing in its duty to protect freedoms and deliver fair justice, warning that such behavior threatens to undermine the public’s trust in the legal system.
“We need a judiciary that stands as a beacon of fairness and justice for all. Instead, we are witnessing rulings that are not only illogical but appear to serve narrow interests,” he declared.
Togbe Afede’s blunt assessment adds to the intensifying scrutiny of Ghana’s judiciary, calling for urgent reforms to restore its credibility and ensure the rule of law prevails over political expediency. Godfred Sey/ Ahotoronline.com
