The deputy Minister for Youth and Sports, Perry Okudzeto says government’s promise to complete all the multi-purpose sports complexes in the country can not be delivered because of the Covid 19 pandemic.
According to him, the projects are in various stages of completion ranging between fifty to sixty percent and were due to be completed by July 2020.
However, due to the outbreak of the pandemic, it has slowed the construction on various sites as they follow government’s directive on the restrictions of movement and social distancing.
President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo – Addo gave the assurance during the State of The Nation Address (SONA) on Thursday, February 20 earlier this year that the facilities will be completed by the end of the year.
The facilities are being constructed in Dormaa, Wa, Dunkwa-on-Offin, Koforidua, Ho, Kaneshie, Yendi, Axim, Navrongo and Nyinahin.
They are part of the promises made by the NPP government to develop the sports sector across the nation by building the complexes in 10 regions.
In 2017, as part of the efforts to establish the National Sports Development Fund, the Minister of Youth and Sports, Honorable Isaac Asiamah also reaffirmed government’s commitment to building an additional fifteen sporting facilities and renovating the Azumah Nelson Sports Complex in Kaneshie, Accra.
The Sports sector has faced lots of infrastructural development issues and previous governments have done little to improve the situation.
