Jamie Carragher has urged Liverpool to revisit their interest in Martin Zubimendi in January to make their excellent start to the season count.
Liverpool currently sit five points ahead of defending Premier League champions Manchester City and nine ahead of Arsenal, having won nine of their 11 games so far under new boss Arne Slot.
And Carragher believes Liverpool must capitalise on their strong start by strengthening their squad in the January transfer window, warning that Slot “might never be in this position again”. Speaking on Stick to Football, Carragher said: “If I was Liverpool I would be doing that (strengthening in January).
” if you are Arne Slot and let’s say an average Premier League manager is at a top club for two or three years trying to win the league. Arteta has been there for four or five years.
Zubimendi is the player he wanted, they ended up putting Gravenberch there who has been fantastic, but if he is the player you want – go and do it – you might never be in this position.
“You might be here three years but City are City and they are five points ahead of you at Christmas. Just make it count.” Liverpool were ready to pay Zubimendi’s £51million release clause over the summer to make him Slot’s first signing.
However, Zubimendi ultimately decided to stay at boyhood club Real Sociedad and he has since been linked with both City and Arsenal. Explaining his decision to remain at Sociedad, Zubimendi said earlier this season: “It is true that there was a lot of noise.
“I went through uncomfortable moments. The best thing for me was to stay here, and I was happy and at peace. Of course, I don’t regret it. I can’t think that after four or five games at the start of the season. I made my decision from within. I thought it was the best thing to do.”
