Police in the Volta region have arrested a coconut seller, Joshua Ababaio, for allegedly murdering his wife and dumping the body in a pond.
The suspect, from Sokode Bagble in the Ho Municipality of the Volta Region, is said to have paid two men GH¢470 to carry out the act.
Speaking to the Ghana News Agency (GNA), the mother of the deceased, Madam Mercy Nfodjoh said that her daughter, Esther Amoasi, 25, lived with her in Sokode Bagble with her three children.
She said that Esther informed her on Friday, July 7, 2017, that she was going to a wake keep in the community. Esther, however, did not return.
The mother said that she decided to go to Ababaio’s house the following day in search of her daughter.
But the landlady informed her that Ababaio borrowed an amount of GH¢ 15 from her at around 0200 hours to pay a taxi driver.
The mother of the deceased said she later received a call at about 0800 hours informing her that Esther’s body had been found floating in a pond at a sand winning site at the outskirts of the village.
She said the youth of the town together with the police retrieved the body.
Ababaio, however, called her later in the afternoon to plead for forgiveness, after claiming that he paid GH¢ 470 to two other persons; Lucky Kumah, and Ben to murder his wife with a club.
He said he decided to kill his wife because he was told of the woman’s alleged infidelity.

His accomplices were also arrested. The three are in custody, assisting with investigations.
