Nigerian rapper Phyno recently shared his thoughts on how parental support for children’s talents has evolved over generations.
Speaking on the “In My Opinion” Podcast, he reflected on his own journey, revealing that his parents weren’t initially in favor of his musical ambitions. “My parents didn’t support my career when I first started. It’s a different story now,” he remarked.
He noted that parents today are more attuned to recognizing and nurturing their children’s passions, whether in music, sports, or other fields. Phyno contrasted this with the past, where pursuing interests like sports often led to punishment.
“Back then, if parents found you playing ball, they’d take your ball away and discipline you. You know what I mean?” he explained. Phyno praised modern parents for understanding the value in encouraging their children’s talents.
“Today, if a father sees his son enjoying football, he enrolls him in an academy. Some even buy a ball as soon as their child is born and say they’ll be the next Neymar,” he shared.
He also acknowledged a significant change in how creative careers are viewed, stating, “Different generations have different perspectives, and I don’t blame my parents. The music industry back then didn’t offer the financial rewards it does now.
People looked at musicians from that time as aimless individuals. But now, talent is recognized as a gift to be celebrated, and I commend this generation of parents for their support.”
