President of the Rastafari Council of Ghana, Ahuma Bosco Ocansay, is urging collective efforts to dignify the Rastafari community and enable its contributions to Ghana’s national development. He highlighted that, despite the stigma often associated with Rastafarianism, members of the community have demonstrated remarkable achievements and raised notable figures who represent them on global platforms.
Mr. Ocansay made these remarks during the official introduction of Nii Ayerh Congo Mpese Teteete I, who was recently crowned as Mpese Chief by the Ga Mantse, Nii Teiko Tsuru II.
This title, conferred by the Ga Mantse, acknowledges the significance of the Rastafari community and the broader African diaspora. The event also marked the 94th anniversary of the coronation of Emperor Haile Selassie, a revered figure in the Rastafari movement and a symbol of African pride and resilience.
The President emphasized that appointing a Chief to represent the Pan-African and diaspora interests on a traditional platform is a powerful step forward. This move not only celebrates Rastafari heritage but also provides the community with a voice in traditional governance, as Nii Ayerh Congo Mpese Teteete I will advocate for their rights and contributions within the Ga community.
Ocansay acknowledged that while public perceptions of Rastafarianism are evolving, further work remains to dismantle prejudices. He highlighted the impactful work of figures like Elder Nene Djabi, a Rastafarian who has sponsored over 500 children with scholarships in and around Somanya in the Eastern Region, contributing significantly to local development and transforming lives within his community.
In his acceptance speech, Nii Ayerh Congo Mpese Teteete I expressed gratitude to the Ga Traditional Council and urged unity among Rastafarians, stressing that division within the community would only undermine their efforts. He called for active involvement in community initiatives and encouraged members to uphold the positive image of Rastafarianism.
