Paa Willie, the National Chairman of the Concerned Drivers Association of Ghana, has announced an increase in transport fares despite the Ghana Private Road Transport Union’s (GPRTU) call to suspend the increment.
He stated that although the transport ministry instructed the police to arrest drivers charging unauthorized fares, no driver has been arrested because no police officer has enforced this directive.
Commercial transport operators express frustration over the prolonged delay in adjusting fares despite recent increases in fuel prices, spare parts, and the overall cost of living.
Several drivers have already raised their fares in response to these escalating expenses.
However, a meeting convened by the Ghana Road Transport Coordinating Council to review fares was postponed again when drivers were informed that the Transport Minister was unavailable for discussions.
In an interview on Ahotor 92.3 FM, Paa Willie explained that they had no choice but to increase fares because the transport ministry is unwilling to address drivers’ concerns.
