Adom Appiah, the Ashanti Regional Secretary of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), has asserted that Kwasi Nyantakyi, the former president of the Ghana Football Association (GFA), remains eligible to participate in the party’s Ejisu parliamentary primary. This stance is rooted in the fact that Nyantakyi has not faced legal conviction for corruption.
Following the unfortunate passing of the Ejisu Member of Parliament (MP) and Deputy Finance Minister, John Kumah, the NPP initiated the nomination process for prospective parliamentary candidates on Tuesday, April 2nd.
Among the nine individuals who have expressed interest by obtaining nomination forms to vie for the seat, Mr. Nyantakyi stands out. However, his candidacy has sparked public criticism, particularly due to allegations of corruption stemming from the widely known “Number 12” exposé implicating the former GFA leader.
Mr Appiah stated that, in his view, no court had proven the former GFA boss guilty, nor had the GFA boss admitted guilt, which is why he is qualified to pick a form and contest the election.
The NPP Ashanti Regional Secretary also suggested that it was up to the vetting committee to review Mr Nyantakyi’s document and make a decision on his candidacy, but he believed Mr Nyantakyi could contest.
