Nana Amoasi VII, the Executive Director of the Institute for Energy Security (IES), has attributed the current spate of power outages to a combination of technical and commercial losses within the power production system. In a candid interview with Citizen Kofi Owusu, he underscored that the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) alone suffers a staggering 30% loss due to inefficiencies in its machinery.
“The equipment utilized by ECG is causing significant losses, nearly reaching 30%. Within the ECG system, both technical and commercial inefficiencies contribute to these losses,” Nana Amoasi remarked during his appearance on Ahotor 92.3 FM.
Furthermore, Nana Amoasi highlighted that even the Ghana Grid Company (GRIDCO), responsible for transmitting power, experiences losses within its infrastructure, which exacerbates the problem of power shortages. These losses, he suggested, are pivotal factors contributing to the ongoing power outages plaguing the nation.

In a bold assertion, Nana Amoasi suggested that the government may be exploiting the power outages, commonly referred to as ‘Dumsor’, for political leverage. He insinuated that the current administration might be leveraging the situation similarly to how the opposition employed it against the National Democratic Congress (NDC) when they were in power. This perceived political maneuvering, he implied, might explain the absence of a clear timetable from ECG regarding power restoration.
Expressing concern for consumers, Nana Amoasi called upon the Consumer Protection Agency to safeguard the rights of consumers amidst the electricity supply challenges. He emphasized the importance of ensuring that consumers are treated fairly and that their needs are addressed transparently amidst the power crisis. Nana Amoasi’s remarks underscore the urgency of addressing the systemic issues contributing to the power outages while advocating for consumer rights protection.
