Political funding is a key issue in our democratic development and it will be difficult to know the source – Christian Service University College Vice President

Vice President of the Christian Service University College Dr. Stephen Banahene has said funding of political parties is a key issue in the country’s democratic development and the cash system of Ghana will make it difficult to know the source of such funds.

His comments come after the calls by the Ghana Integrity Initiative(GII) for the Electoral Commission to demand audited financial statements of political parties.

The Ghana Integrity Initiative is asking the Electoral Commission (EC) to act on its mandate of demanding audited financial statements of political parties as a way of scrutinizing financiers of activities of the parties.

This comes in the wake of the increasing cost of political campaigns which invariably fuels serious and organised crimes believed to be perpetrated by party financiers.

The political think-tank says the EC must be interested and serious in finding out the faces financing campaigns of aspiring political leaders, to minimize organized crimes in Ghana.

Speaking in an interview with Citizen Kofi Owusu on Ahotor 92.3 FM‘s morning show, Mr. Stephen Banahene said it will be difficult for the Electoral Commission to know the source of income of a political party in Ghana.

Dr. Stephen Banahene said Ghana’s cash system is not designed to know the source of income for the political parties financiers to pay taxes or not.

He called for measures in place to know the source of income of individuals in the country to help broaden the country’s tax net.
