Senegal winger Krepin Diatta has been ruled out of the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations in Cameroon early next year after suffering anterior cruciate ligament injury which rules the AS Monaco star out of the season.
Diatta will be out for at least a few months following the surgery, but there is hope that the injury, which he suffered against Lille last week, is a hyperextension of the muscle rather than a full tear, and therefore might only require a few months rather than a full year of recovery.
Either way, he won’t be available for Monaco (for which he has started three Ligue 1 matches this season) or Senegal (which competes in the African Cup of Nations in January).
Krepin Diatta joined Monaco on a five-and-a-half-year contract from Belgian First Division A side Club Brugge earlier this year.
On the international scene, Diatta has established himself as a regular fixture in the Senegal national team since he made his debut in a 2-0 win over Madagascar in March 2019.
He has made 10 appearances for the Teranga Lions and was part of Aliou Cisse’s team that finished second at the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations.
Thanks to his impressive performances in Egypt, Diatta – after scoring a goal in seven appearances – was decorated as the Young Player of the Tournament.
Victor Osimhen, Gervinho & Youssef En-Nesyri will all be missing the AFCON.
