Mission schools have codes and GES should stay off WEYGEYHEY- Richmond- Owusu Frimpong

The Methodist Church Ghana has rejected a directive by the Ghana Education Service (GES) to allow Muslim students to fast during Ramadan on campus at the Wesley Girls’ High School in Cape Coast.

The church said it took a strong exception to the directive stressing that it “cannot accede to the unilateral directive issued by the Ghana Education Service.”

It argued that the school rule in question “is a long-standing one which is also non-religious and various renowned Muslim ladies in Ghana have passed through the school adhering to such a rule.”

Reacting to this on Ahotor Fm, Mr. Richmond Owusu Frimpong, a social and political commentator backed the decision taken by the school authorities.

He said every mission school has a religious affiliation which he thinks the Wesley Girls’ High School being under the Methodist Church will surely have a Methodist believes  undertone.

“Every mission school has some kind of religious undertone which must be respected no matter what” He said.

Mr. Frimpong expressed worries of how leaders handle national issues which he says is a threat to national security.

“Let me sound this warning to the leaders, the way we handle things in the country is very dangerous to the peace and security of our country” He said.

Mr. Richmond Owusu Frimpong believes the decision taken by the authorities of the school is a step in the right direction because the school has a policy which must be obeyed.

Meanwhile, the Wesley Girls’ High School Old Girls’ Association (WGHS OGA) says the school’s ‘No fasting’ policy was made for health reasons but not to discriminate against other faiths.

The Association said the policy came out of past experiences where some girls fasting for various reasons, put their lives at risk and almost died which traumatized their mates, as well as, the school administration.

They said they would object to any attempts to create disaffection for the School and any acts that could result in compromising adherence to rules, policies and practices that have contributed towards shaping the high calibre of its products for the past 186 years in existence.
