A political Analyst and a Political Science lecturer at the Cape Coast University, Mr Jonathan Asante Okyere has added his voice to a call previously made by former President and Flagbearer of the NDC, H.EJohn Dramani Mahama, according to Asante, Ghanaians appear increasingly fed up with mere promises by some politicians and believes that a debate will grant Ghanaians the opportunity to know the how aside the fancy promises.
Addressing the chiefs and people of Kwamekrom in the Biakoye constituency at the beginning of a three-day tour of the Oti Region weeks ago, Mr Mahama said president Akufo- Addo is at liberty to select the moderators and the institution that he wants to organise the debate, and he will show up to debate the president on any day, at any time and anywhere.
Speaking to Alaska, a sit-in host on the Ahotor Morning show, the Cape Coast University lecturer also called for debate between veeps specifically between Dr. Bawumia of the Npp and Prof Jean Naana Opoku Agyemang of the NDC, Mr. Asante indicated that the era for just talking is over, tell Ghanaians the how.
“People take the political political platform and promise all sort of things even though they know they can’t deliver, typical example is Nana Addo’s 2016 who promised 300 SHS , a port a Keta, now I’m told it’s just a sign board and paid CEO. The debate will offer us more than just promises but the how”
Background
The calls for Presidential debate was ignited by the Flagbearer of the NDC after Dr. Bawumia sought to just in his results fair address the Npp has a superior infrastructure records .
During his presentation of the Akufo-Addo government’s infrastructure record weeks ago in Accra, Dr Bawumia revealed what he said were staggering disparities in the value of similar projects undertaken by the erstwhile John Mahama government and current projects by the Akufo-Addo government.
According to Dr Bawumia, the cost of projects undertaken by the Mahama government, on a comparative value for money analysis, appear to be quite outrageous.
For instance, the Vice President said while the NPP government is constructing four major interchanges; Tema, Pokuase, Tamale and Obetsebi Lamptey interchanges at a cost of $289m, the Mahama administration built the Kwame Nkrumah interchange alone at a cost of $260m.
For the Pokuase interchange, which he said is 75% complete, Dr Bawumia explained that the loan agreement for the project was signed in November 2016 for a three-tier interchange, but the Akufo-Addo government renegotiated for a four-tier interchange without any increase in cost.
