The National Chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Johnson Asiedu Nketia, has instructed the party’s members of parliament to boycott any emergency recall of Parliament.
Speaking during his campaign in Asasetre, located in the Ellembelle constituency of the Western Region, Mr. Asiedu Nketia underscored the vital role Parliament plays in safeguarding Ghana’s democracy. He reaffirmed the NDC’s unwavering commitment to protecting the country’s democratic principles and institutions, vowing that the party would not allow a select few to undermine Ghana’s democratic foundations.
“We are committed to defending Ghana’s democracy and ensuring its integrity. If any attempt is made to compromise these principles, we will take all necessary steps to resist it,” Mr. Nketia stated.
Adding his voice to the directive, Hon. Ebenezer Okletey Terlabi, the Member of Parliament for Lower Manya Krobo, expressed support for the chairman’s stance. Speaking in an interview with Citizen Kofi on Ahotor FM, Hon. Terlabi emphasized the loyalty of NDC MPs to the party’s leadership.
“The MPs are in Parliament because of the NDC, and we will not disobey directives from the party. If there’s an emergency recall, proper consultations must be done with the NDC leadership to ensure inclusiveness,” Hon. Terlabi remarked.
He further suggested that Mr. Asiedu Nketia might have privileged information that informed his directive, adding, “Perhaps our National Chairman has heard something critical, and that is why he issued this directive. As MPs, it is our duty to obey.”
This bold stance by the NDC leadership highlights the party’s determination to ensure decisions affecting Parliament and the country align with democratic principles and inclusivity.
Hon. Terlabi Criticizes President Akufo-Addo’s Leadership, Challenges Dr. Bawumia on Economic Performance
Hon. Ebenezer Okletey Terlabi, Member of Parliament for Lower Manya Krobo, has strongly criticized the leadership of President Nana Akufo-Addo, describing the current state of the country as deeply troubling. Speaking during an interview, Hon. Terlabi expressed disappointment in the President, who he said should know better, given his background as a lawyer.
“It is alarming where the President has landed this country. For someone of his legal stature, I am shocked at the reckless manner in which he is governing Ghana. It’s a shame,” Hon. Terlabi remarked.
The MP also took a swipe at Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, challenging him to stabilize the cedi by bringing the dollar exchange rate down to GH₵10 before the 2024 elections. According to Hon. Terlabi, the current state of the economy, is a direct indictment of the Vice President’s much-touted economic expertise.
“Dr. Bawumia must show his so-called economic prowess. He should bring the dollar down to GH₵10 before the elections if he wants Ghanaians to take him seriously. Where is the Economic Management Team? What have they achieved? Dr. Bawumia’s performance has been nothing short of irresponsible,” he stated.
Hon. Terlabi further accused the vice president of wasting Ghana’s resources, particularly in the areas of public funds and fuel, questioning the rationale behind his election as vice president.
“President Akufo-Addo told us that Dr. Bawumia was chosen because of his expertise in economic management. But what has he done with that expertise? Today, he’s asking Ghanaians to vote for him, but what has he contributed to the nation during his tenure?” Hon. Terlabi queried.
The MP’s comments reflect growing dissatisfaction within sections of the political opposition over the government’s handling of the economy, particularly as Ghanaians grapple with the rising cost of living and currency depreciation.
