Mahama Challenges NPP’s 2.6 Million Job Claim Amid Rising Unemployment

National Democratic Congress (NDC) Presidential Candidate John Dramani Mahama has raised serious concerns about the country’s rising unemployment, questioning the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) claim of creating 2.6 million jobs.

John Mahama noted that when he left office in 2016, the unemployment rate stood at 8.4%, yet it has now surged to over 14%—a statistic that, he argued, contradicts the NPP’s job creation figures.

Speaking in Bawjiase in the Awutu Senya East constituency during his Central Region tour, Mr. Mahama called for greater transparency, urging the NPP to be honest with Ghanaians about the true state of the economy and employment.

In recent statements, NPP Presidential Candidate Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia claimed that his administration has outperformed past governments, citing data from the Social Security and National Insurance Trust (SSNIT) and other sources showing 2.6 million jobs created—1.4 million in the private sector and 1.2 million in the public sector.

John Mahama challenged these claims, arguing that if 2.6 million jobs had indeed been created over the past eight years, unemployment should have decreased, not risen.

“Ghanaians deserve the truth,” he said, urging voters to reject what he termed as “empty promises” from the NPP and support a new administration that would genuinely tackle unemployment and reset the economy.

Confident in his party’s vision for change, John Mahama encouraged Ghanaians to vote for the NDC in December, pledging a government focused on real job creation and economic revival.
