Settle Outstanding NABCO Payments Before Making Job Promises – Mahama to Bawumia

National Democratic Congress (NDC) presidential candidate John Dramani Mahama has sharply criticized Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia’s promise to create jobs for youth, calling it hollow given the government’s recent track record.

Speaking to a crowd in Kwamikrom in the Biakoye Constituency during his Oti Region tour, Mr. Mahama pointed to the plight of former Nation Builders Corps (NABCO) trainees, who are still owed months of unpaid allowances, as a sign of the administration’s failure to fulfill its commitments to young people.

“Dr. Bawumia talks about creating jobs, but let him first pay the NABCO trainees who have been waiting for months for their allowances. Ghanaians need proof before they believe any new promises,” Mr. Mahama stated, urging Ghanaians to reject the NPP, whom he accused of eight years of deception and broken promises.

John Mahama also shared his concerns over Bawumia’s absence from the recent National Peace Campaign launch, which Mahama attended after suspending his tour.

“Yesterday, I set aside my campaign to support the peace campaign, but Bawumia was a no-show. Instead, he was off making promises to the youth. If he’s serious about supporting them, he should start by honoring the commitments already made.”

Reflecting on the NPP’s initial plea for Ghanaians to “try them,” John Mahama lamented the state of the nation under their administration.

“They begged us to try them, but this trial has become a curse. They’ve led us into economic hardship beyond anything we saw before,” he said, citing soaring costs for essentials and a steep currency decline.

“When I was in office, kenkey cost 1 GH₵; today, it’s 5 GH₵. Cement has gone from 24 GH₵ to 110 GH₵, and the cedi has fallen from 4 to 17 against the dollar.”

John Mahama further criticized the NPP’s continued campaign efforts, saying, “If I were in their shoes, I’d be too embarrassed to ask for votes after leaving the country in such a state. But instead, they campaign as if these eight years never happened. We must hold them accountable and choose better for our future.”
