Our Tier-2 pension hasn’t been paid since July 2023. We’re worried our money is being misused – Angel Carbonu
Angel Carbonu, President of the National Association of Graduate Teachers (NAGRAT), voiced concerns regarding the government’s delay in disbursing Tier-2 pension funds.
During an interview on Ahotor 92.3 FM, Mr. Carbonu disclosed that the government last disbursed Tier-2 pension funds in June 2023 and urged clarity on the whereabouts of these funds.
He highlighted that monthly deductions from workers’ salaries, managed by the Controller and Accountant General’s Department, are not promptly directed to their intended destinations, including contributions to the Social Security and National Insurance Trust (SSNIT), Tier-2 pension funds, and union dues.
Mr. Carbonu expressed apprehension that similar delays may affect Tier-1 SSNIT contributions, which could worsen the financial vulnerability of workers and pension schemes.
He stressed the severe consequences of these delays, particularly for individuals in urgent need of access to their invested funds, such as in the case of sudden death.
Mr. Carbonu explained that affected individuals would receive their invested funds minus deductions made since July 2023, leading to diminished returns and financial insecurity.
He emphasized the government’s responsibility to ensure timely payment of mandatory deductions on behalf of workers, noting that the failure to do so hampers pension schemes’ ability to adequately support their members.
Mr. Carbonu questioned whether government officials are using these funds to the detriment of teacher unions, highlighting the detrimental impact on members’ financial security.
