Govt. needs Urgent Focus on Basic Primary Schools as Cornerstone of Educational Progress–Gborgbortsi
The educational system faces significant challenges, particularly in the areas of skills development and theoretical learning. Since the inception of the Free Senior High School (FSHS) program, attention to the basic primary schools’ development has been sorely neglected, leading to setbacks in foundational education.
According to Mr. Norbert Gborgbortsi, the former Deputy Director of Communication for the Coalition of Concerned Teachers of Ghana (CCT-GH), speaking on the Adekyee Mu Nsem morning show on Ahotor 92.3 FM in Accra, the constitution emphasizes the importance of quality education starting from the primary level. However, there has been a lack of improvement and investment in primary school curriculum and resources.
Gborgbortsi argues that the FSHS program, though well-intentioned, prioritizes theoretical learning over practical skills. The absence of well-equipped workshops and science laboratories hampers students’ ability to apply their knowledge practically, which is essential for preparing them for the job market or self-employment.
Moreover, universities are concerned about the declining quality of students entering tertiary programs from FSHS. Without intervention, this trend could result in graduates ill-prepared for the demands of the job market.
In response to these challenges, John Mahama, the flag bearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), has pledged to revive Technical Vocational Education and Training (TVET) and E-block infrastructure initiated during his tenure. He emphasizes the importance of addressing issues such as timely disbursement of education grants, improving infrastructure, and enhancing the implementation of education policies.
Mahama’s commitment extends to engaging all stakeholders for a more inclusive educational system, prioritizing collaboration with teacher unions and other key players to develop effective policies that ensure quality education for all Ghanaian children.
