It is deeply regrettable and concerning that despite our engagement in this international event, we have failed to prioritize value for money, resulting in the misappropriation of millions of dollars invested in the games. Shockingly, certain executive members have prioritized personal gain over the interests of the state.
The All African Games, aside from its sporting significance, holds immense economic potential for infrastructure development, capacity building, and overall economic growth by bringing together 52 African countries to host this prestigious event. However, it is disheartening that what should have been a showcase of African unity has now been marred by scandal.
During an interview on Ahotor 92.3 FM hosted by Citizen Kofi Owusu in Accra, the Member of Parliament for South Tongu and ranking member for Youth and Sports in Parliament expressed dismay over the situation. Testimonies from volunteers who participated in the three-week event revealed alarming instances where the local organizing committee failed to compensate about a thousand volunteers from Ghana for their services.
These volunteers, who selflessly offered their assistance out of patriotism and a sense of nationalism, now find themselves in a struggle to receive the stipends they were promised. Reports indicate that each volunteer is owed 2000 Ghana Cedis, along with an additional 500 cedis for transportation, and was supposed to receive their allowances or appreciation package by Tuesday, March 26.
Furthermore, the Minority in Ghana’s Parliament has condemned the 13th edition of the African Games as a disgrace to the nation. They criticized the organization of the event, citing it as poorly executed, despite initial challenges faced by the Local Organizing Committee.
While the completion of infrastructure projects such as the Borteyman Sports Complex and University of Ghana Stadium is commendable, it does not overshadow the mismanagement and poor organization of the games.
However, the mishandling of funds and organizational shortcomings have tarnished the reputation of Ghana on the international stage, and there is an urgent need for accountability and transparency in future events.
