Anti-gay Bill: You Also Benefit from Ghanaians – Prof. Smart ‘Fires’ Opposing Foreign Nationals

Prof. Smart Sarpong, Director of the Institute of Research, Innovation, and Development at Kumasi Technical University, has lashed out at the conduct of some foreign nations relative to the passage of Ghana’s anti-gay bill for parading themselves as though they do not benefit from Ghanaians.

Speaking in a media interview, the academician said that it becomes disheartening to hear some foreign nationals talk as if they do not benefit from the Ghanaian economy.

No European will give you money without expecting anything from you,. We should let them know that they also benefit from us. When you visit Anglogold Ashanti, you will be amazed at the ounce of gold that is exported from this country every day.

They should know that we are all in business. In this global village, we are all dependent on each other. They also benefit so much from us; hence, they should not make us feel as though they do not get anything from us”

Prof. Sarpong’s comment comes in the wake of the passage of the controversial anti-gay bill passed by the Parliament of Ghana, which is yet to be presented to the President for assent.

On Wednesday, February 28, Parliament passed the anti-gay bill after going through a series of amendments.

The passage of the bill caused an uproar within the public space, where some civil society and human rights groups expressed their displeasure over the passage of the bill.

Top of these organizations is the United States Embassy, whose Ambassador, Virginia Evelyn Palmer, lamented that the passage of the bill into law could affect the economic fortunes of the country.

“In contrast to her stance, Prof. Smart revealed that there is interdependency around the globe; hence, no one should think that they are doing Ghanaians a favour, “he stressed.

Ghanaians must hold their cultural identities in the highest esteem and not succumb to external pressures that are detrimental to their beliefs and doctrines.
