The exact date in history is not necessary, but at the time when global alignment was a division between geopolitical East and West. The west, consisting of former colonialists, came around to form a neoliberal alliance with America as its head.
The Eastern block consisted of countries united upon the socialist ideology. These were mainly countries with no previous colonial legacies. They didn’t have former colonies from whence rich natural and mineral would be sourced.
New countries of the global South that had previous colonial ties with some white European nations decided to stay conveniently neutral of the two global groupings.
This, by and large, brought a degree of safety to newly emerged countries and in the event of actual confrontation between the ideologically divided blocks, such third world countries, as they’ve been known since, would not be obliged to provide fighting men to fight for either of the two blocks.
Our forefathers who go ahead to create this non-aligned movement had the view that it was safe to have engagement with the political west and east and to do business with them both.
In those meaningful non-aligned days, South Africa wasn’t even considered a viable state due its Apartheid system of governance which had brought international snobbery, with many countries, including those in the Warsaw Pact block choosing to adopted a cold-shoulder posture against Apartheid South Africa.
In them times, Ghana was at the forefront of any activity or efforts to fight injustices and oppression across the world. After independence, Osagyefo made sure our Ghana stood firm against oppression and stayed abreast with all freedom fighters. Those were the days we seriously had our dignity and pride to protect.
Today, all liberated citizens of black Africa have gone quiet, leaving only South Africa, alone to stand up against injustices, as it is going on in Gaza. This situation is seriously shameful.
