Private Legal Practitioner and a member of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) Legal Team Lawyer Samuel Atukwei Quaye Esq has said bail is free and anybody who offers or receives money for bail purposes perpetrates illegality.
He said the desperation of suspects to avoid being dragged to court pushes them to offer money to police officers to get bail.
Speaking in an interview on Ahotor 92.3 Fm‘s morning show dubbed ‘Ade Kyi Mu Nsem‘, Lawyer Atukwei said some police officers take advantage of the ignorance and panic of suspects who want to be bailed and charge them illegally before they are released from custody.
He said bail is free and anybody who offers or receives money for bail purposes perpetrates illegality.
“You don’t pay for bail, if police arrest you, we have two types of bail, the police themselves can bail you on a self-recognizance bail and you don’t have to pay anything,” he said.
He said under no circumstance should anybody pay money to a police officer when applying for bail for suspects, saying that such practice was unacceptable in the constitution of Ghana.
