Cristiano Ronaldo scores another free-kick in his record-breaking game for Portugal.
The 38-year-old phenomenon became the leading all-time appearance-maker in international football on Thursday night. Ronaldo earned his 197th cap during the 4-0 Euro 2024 qualifier win over Liechtenstein, overtaking former Kuwait international Bader Al-Mutawa.
His performance on the big occasion certainly didn’t disappoint, with the five-time Ballon d’Or winner netting twice.
The first was a 51st-minute penalty. But it was his second that will capture the attention of both his fans and critics, having netted a cannon of a free-kick from just outside of the penalty area.
Ronaldo’s set piece was hit with ferocity, leaving the opposition goalkeeper unable to parry it out despite getting a touch on it. He celebrated the strike by running towards the corner flag and doing his trademark ‘siu’ leap.
It comes just a week after the former Manchester United legend rolled back the years with another free-kick – from 40 yards – while playing for Al-Nassr in the Saudi Pro League
