Former Black Stars player, Sam Johnson has debunked claims that the current senior national team squad don’t deserve the huge bonuses they are paid but rather the team needs money to cater for themselves and their families even after retirement.
The former Hearts of Oak midfielder revealed that aside from the work done by the players during training and matches, they have lots of responsibilities on and off the field even when they hang up their boots.
Johnson argued that there are no plans or insurance cover for injured players who commit themselves to the success of the National team and some end up loosing their positions in their various clubs afterwards.
For Johnson, the only way the players can still live a standard life after retirement is if they have money to cater for themselves and for that reason, every penny they demand must be given to them.
“As a nation, we easily forget about our players once they retire and the players are left to their own fate. Who caters for them after retirement and how will they take care of their families”
“Jerry Akaminko was injured playing for the Black Stars and that was the end. His career has never been the same since and what insurance package did we put in place for him?, he quizzed”.
” I had an injuy playing for the Black Stars and I was left to my fate afterwards. For this reason, I have always supported the need to give them whatever money they demand. I am an example to this and will always support them to demand for their fair share of whatever they ask for in monetary terms’ ‘.
Sam Johnson said these in an interview on Ahotor FM’s Agorokansie.
The ex player was an integral member of the Black Stars during his playing days and played in various positions for the national team.
