The Central Regional Police Command has arrested two people believed to be the owners of the galamsey site which collapsed Wednesday Morning at Dunkwa Bremang Brogoyedur in the Upper Denkyira West District of Central Region.
The incident led to the death of five people instantly. Many were injured and over 50 people are still believed to be trapped in the illegal pit.
Speaking with Starr News, the deputy Central regional Police PRO Sergent Evans Enttie explained that “on Wednesday about 6:25 am, the Denkyira Dominase Police received a report around 5 am, about a mining pit that caved in on some illegal miners at Denkyira Breman.
The Police, accompanied by some NADMO officials retrieved the deceased named Kwasi Yeboah, aged 24, Fabatia aged 13, and a female adult whose identity was unknown.
The suspects, Kwaku Appiah and Kofi Appiah have been arrested and are being interrogated by the police.
Meanwhile, it is alleged that over 50 people are still trapped in the pit and operations are being put in place to get them out.
Bodies of the deceased have been deposited at the Dunkwa-On-Offin Municipal Hospital Mortuary for preservation, identification and autopsy.
Report from the police has it that, the case is under investigation.
According to the police, 36 people have been rescued from the pit with some in critical condition and receiving treatment at Dunkwa-on-Offin government hospital.
