The President of Ghana Nana Addo Dankwah Akufo-Addo has warned of an imminent lockdown should the laxity in adhering to safety protocols for the coronavirus disease (COVID-19) pandemic continue.
This has raised many questions with regards to the country’s ability to afford another lockdown taking into consideration the impact the 21-day lockdown in March 2020 had on the socio-economic status of the country.
However, the Executive Director of the Institute for Liberty and Policy Innovation Mr. Bismark Peter Kwoffie believes Ghana cannot afford the economic impact of a lockdown.
Speaking on Ahotor Fm’s morning show program dubbed “Adekyi Mu Nsem” Mr. Kwoffie said Ghana does not have any intervention plan for the second wave covid-19 and therefore any lockdown will put pressure on the economy.
“Ghana does not have any intervention plan for the second wave of the covid-19”, he said.
“If we go on a lockdown, we are now going to think of what we should do to sustain the economy. We are not prepared for the cost involve in terms of the economy” He added.
Mr. Kwoffie said instead of waiting for the covid-19 vaccine, we should have been working around building some health infrastructures.
With the Ghana Medical Association (GMA) warning that hospitals are over-stretched due to the rise of covid-19 cases, the new hospitals the President promised would have been a great intervention.
Mr. Bismark Kwoffie revealed the poor health status of the country which threatens its ability to deal with the covid infections should the spike escalate.
