GFA to lose big money over cancellation of league

The Ghana Football Association has truncated the 2019-2020 soccer season after more than three months of holding soccer lovers in suspense.
The Executive Council (Exco) of the Football Association on Tuesday, June 30 took the decision after long hours of a crucial meeting at the association’s headquarters in Accra.
A statement after the meeting from the football association reads:
“The Executive Council of the Ghana Football Association (GFA), has taken a decision to cancel the 2019/2020 football season following a marathon meeting on Tuesday, June 30, 2020 at the GFA Secretariat in Accra.”
The decision means Ghana for three years running has not completed a season.
The Women’s Premier League which was already halfway through with seven games remaining has also been cancelled.
The Executive Committee further concluded that the previous representatives will be representing the country once again in the 2020/2021 edition of the Confederation of Africa Football (CAF) club competitions
Asante Kotoko and AshantiGold Sporting Club will therefore represent Ghana in the CAF elite clubs competitions.
According to the Communications Director, Henry Asante Twum who spoke to Ahotor FM sports after the meeting, Kotoko will play in the CAF Champions League and AshantiGold in the CAF Confederation Cup.
The two clubs won their tickets to represent the nation based on their exploits in the 2019 Normalization Committee Special Tournament.
Asante Kotoko were winners in the Tier 1 after beating Western Region based Karela United on penalties. AshantiGold also beat Nzema Kotoko at the Cape Coast Stadium to be crowned champions of the Tier 2 tournament.
The Football Association will reportedly lose a grand sum of $ 2.2 million for ending the soccer season abruptly in the wake of the Covid-19 pandemic.
The GFA press release noted that the Executive Council will again meet on July 9, 2020 to explore other avenues for next season.
“The Executive Council will meet on Thursday, July 9, 2020 to discuss all issues relating to the next football season and Congress.
“The GFA will continue its engagement with all sponsors and all stakeholders following the cancellation of the season.”
The cancellation of the season was necessitated due to the directive of the President, Nana Akufo Addo to suspend all public gathering and sporting activities until further notice.
Although the Government recently allowed for non contact sports to commence, football is still suspended until at least 31st July 2020.
Ghana’s neighbouring West African countries like Ivory Coast, Togo, Burkina Faso and Nigeria have all annulled their various leagues.
