The Board Chairman of the National Sports Authority, Honorable Kwadwo Baah Agyemang insists, football will not benefit from the government stimulus package.
According to him, the package does not include the Ghana Football Association (GFA) because Government does not consider them as small or medium scale businesses and for that reason makes them unqualified.
“The package is for small and medium scale businesses and by that definition alone makes the GFA unqualified,” Baah Agyemang says. “Government doesn’t consider the GFA to be in these categories so will not benefit from it.”
He advised that football administrators should not pretend they were making money before the Covid-19 pandemic because they were not making any money.
“As a matter of fact, no club in Ghana makes even GHC 1,000 profit a month. Finance has always been a problem for our clubs so let’s not say clubs are suffering because of Covid-19,” he added.
Kwadwo Baah however indicated that, although football is not part of the package, government would not sit aloof without doing anything to help the football family and he believes they will get something different with the discussions going on between Government and stakeholders.
Meanwhile the Ghana Premier League has been suspended since March and the GFA will make a decision on June 30 on whether to cancel the league or continue.
