Some 151 Ghanaian migrants in Libya will return to Ghana with the assistance of the International Organisation for Migration (IOM) soon, Foreign Affairs Minister, Shirley Ayorkor Botchway has said.
The IOM in a letter dated 5 March 2018, “informed the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration about an upcoming evacuation and voluntary return of approximately 151 Ghanaians by charter,” she told parliament on Wednesday, 7 March 2018.
This comes after government facilitated the return of some 127 Ghanaians from Libya last year following reports of modern day slavery in that country.
Ms Botchway noted that her Ministry has accordingly informed the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) and the Ghana Immigration Service to stand by for the repatriation exercise.
A lot of Ghanaians and Africans trek the perilous Sahara Desert yearly to Libya for greener pastures. A lot of them perish on the way.
