Confusion erupted at the Tema Harbour Thursday when Ghanaian workers at China Harbor and Engineering Company protested against the management of the company.
The workers were protesting against what they termed bad conditions of service and it took the police to disperse them at the company’s premises following a chaotic spectacle.
The police fired rubber bullets and tear gas to ward the agitated workers off the company’s premises. Three of the workers sustained injuries and had been rushed to the hospital for medical attention.
Speaking to Citi FM, some of the workers cited “bad conditions of service,” as the reason behind their demonstration, but management of the company denied the claims.
“All I saw was personnel from the Ghana Police Service, firing tear gas and rubber bullets, shouting at us to move out,” an unidentified worker stated.
“We have laid our grievances before them [management] but they’ve made no attempt to solve even one of them,” another worker opined. “How can we be receiving just Gh¢ 200.00 as a monthly salary? I can only make an extra GHC 100.00 or 150.00 and we have families at home that we need to cater for.”
