Parliament Holds 2-Day Workshop to Orient Parliamentary Press Corps on Revised Standing Orders

In recent weeks, Clerk of Parliament Mr. Cyril K.O Nsiah highlighted the importance of orientation workshops for honorable members of Parliament and procedural staff of the parliamentary service. These workshops aimed to familiarize participants with the current standing orders of the house, essential for the smooth functioning of parliamentary affairs.

Mr. Nsiah underscored the significance of these workshops, noting that they provided valuable opportunities for participants to gain confidence and proficiency in parliamentary procedures. He expressed satisfaction with the outcomes of the workshops, emphasizing their role in enhancing the efficiency and effectiveness of parliamentary operations.

The Clerk of Parliament emphasized the alignment of parliamentary practices with Article 110 of the 1992 Constitution, which empowers the House to regulate its proceedings through standing orders. These orders delineate the rules and protocols governing parliamentary business, ensuring adherence to constitutional principles and democratic norms.

During his opening address, Mr. Nsiah stressed the imperative of refining parliamentary processes to address contemporary challenges and uphold transparency in the democratic process. He emphasized the need for Parliament to adapt to emerging legislative trends observed across the Commonwealth, thereby enhancing its legislative capacity and responsiveness to societal needs.

“After twenty-three years of adherence to the provisions of the previous Standing Orders of the House, with minimal amendments, it is prudent that Parliament refines its processes and procedures per emerging legislative trends across the Commonwealth,” stated Mr. Nsiah.

By embracing a proactive approach to parliamentary reform, Parliament aims to strengthen its institutional capacity and fulfill its constitutional mandate effectively. The commitment to refining parliamentary processes underscores Parliament’s dedication to promoting good governance and democratic values in Ghana.
