A former Justice of the Appeal Court, Justice Isaac Douse, has lamented on the judgment of the Supreme Court that led to the removal of the former Member of Parliament for Assin North, James Gyakye Quayson from Parliament.
According to him, the Justices who presided over the case made a mistake by ruling that Gyakye Quayson was not eligible to contest in the 2023 elections.
Speaking in an interview with Nana Dogbe on ‘The Yepe Hunu Show’, the former judge said that the ousted MP proved to the court that he did his part to renounce his citizenship which was sufficient.
“There is something called public opinion, and public opinion is not used at court but looking at this seems Mr. Quayson’s court issue has been removed from court and is been judged outside the court”.

Justice Douse also said the criticism the supreme court is facing over its ruling is justified.
The Supreme Court of Ghana, on May 17, 2023, ordered the parliament of Ghana to expunge the name of Mr. James Gyakye Quayson as a Member of Parliament (MP).
According to the Court, the ousted Assin North MP failed to prove that he had renounced his Canadian citizenship when he filled his nomination to contest the 2020 general elections.
Parliament subsequently declared the Assin North seat vacant, leading to the Electoral Commission of Ghana announcing a be – election on May 27, 2023, to fill the seat.
