John Dramani Mahama, the Presidential Candidate of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), has expressed deep concern over the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) ongoing efforts to rewrite Ghana’s history, particularly in relation to the country’s first President, Dr. Kwame Nkrumah.
John Mahama, speaking at Ellembelle during his Western Region tour, vehemently rejected attempts to undermine Kwame Nkrumah’s legacy, emphasizing that the NDC would restore the true history of Ghana’s independence.
He accused the NPP of engaging in a deliberate act of historical revisionism by distorting the role Dr. Kwame Nkrumah played in Ghana’s independence and nation-building.
He declared, “The NPP’s efforts to rewrite our history will not succeed. Kwame Nkrumah remains the founder of Ghana, and no one can take that away from him.”
Drawing attention to the pivotal role of Kwame Nkrumah in Ghana’s fight for independence, Mr. Mahama stated, “While many Ghanaians—market women, traders, and citizens from all walks of life—contributed to our freedom, it is Kwame Nkrumah who stands out as the modern-day founder of this great nation.”
John Mahama further criticized the current administration for altering historical textbooks to downplay Kwame Nkrumah’s legacy and elevate other figures, such as the Big Six.
“The NPP has gone as far as revising textbooks used in our schools to undermine the contributions of Dr. Kwame Nkrumah and elevate the Big Six. But no matter how much they try, Kwame Nkrumah will always be the true founder of Ghana,” he said.
In response to the historical distortion, John Mahama promised that an NDC government would set the record straight by reinstating Nkrumah’s rightful place in Ghana’s history.
“Under the NDC, we will restore Dr. Kwame Nkrumah to his rightful place in our history, where he belongs. The history of our country will no longer be subjected to revisionism,” he declared.
John Mahama’s remarks serve as a reminder of the NDC’s commitment to preserving Ghana’s true history and honoring the legacy of the nation’s founding father, Dr. Kwame Nkrumah.
