John Dramani Mahama, the Presidential Candidate of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), has boldly asserted that the New Patriotic Party (NPP) has nothing left to offer Ghanaians, urging the electorate to return to the NDC for the country’s continued development.
Speaking at Tarkwa as part of his ongoing Western Regional tour, Mr. Mahama emphasized that the NDC has consistently outperformed the NPP in terms of progress and development.
Drawing an analogy, he described the NDC as the “old wife” and the NPP as the “new wife,” urging Ghanaians to return to the party that once treated them well. Citing Ghanaian musician Nana Tuffuor, John Mahama quoted, “Me yere dadaa san b3 ware me,” meaning that sometimes it is best to return to what worked in the past.
John Mahama’s remarks were a direct challenge to the NPP’s claims of superior economic management.
He pointed out that under the current administration, the economy has been mismanaged, leading to skyrocketing prices and an unbearable cost of living.
“The NPP claims they are better managers of the economy, but the economy is in shambles, and the prices of goods and services have skyrocketed. That’s why Bawumia isn’t talking about the economy anymore—he’s now focusing on digitalization,” Mr. Mahama said.
He further warned that the true extent of the damage caused by the NPP will only become apparent when they leave office.
“When the frog dies, that’s when we will see its true length. Ghanaians will be shocked to see the mess the NPP has created once they are out of power,” he remarked. “The full scale of their mismanagement will be revealed.”
Assuring Ghanaians of the NDC’s commitment to transparency and accountability, John Mahama vowed that a new NDC administration would recover all looted state funds and properties.
“The NDC promises to recover all looted state assets,” he said. “That’s why the NPP always dreams about me, John Mahama, when they sleep, because they know I will never allow them to spend the money they’ve stolen in peace.”
Confident in the NDC’s chances in the 2024 elections, John Mahama reiterated that his party would continue and complete the developmental projects that the current government has abandoned.
He specifically promised that the roads in Tarkwa, a town vital to Ghana’s gold production, would be fixed, ensuring that Tarkwa lives up to its title as the “City of Gold.”
He also addressed key sectors that have suffered under the NPP’s leadership.
“Under the eight years of NPP rule, the cocoa sector has collapsed, and oil and gas production has seen a 32% decline,” he stated.
He vowed to implement a plan to revitalize these industries and improve the livelihoods of Ghanaians, particularly in mining communities like Tarkwa.
He proposed the establishment of a program at the University of Mines and Technology in Tarkwa to train small-scale miners in sustainable practices that avoid land and water body destruction.
In a direct appeal to Ghanaians, John Mahama urged them not to repeat the mistake of voting for the NPP.
“The time is now to send the elephant that came home to destroy our things back to the bush,” he declared, referring to the NPP’s symbol and its impact on the country.
He also took a swipe at the NPP’s current campaign, stating that it has “fallen in water” due to a lack of concrete messages for the electorate.
“The NPP’s campaign has faltered because they don’t have anything substantial to offer. They are fixated on Free SHS, while their flagbearer is talking only about digitalization when he was supposed to focus on fixing the economy,” Mr. Mahama said.
Addressing concerns over the NDC’s stance on Free SHS, John Mahama reassured Ghanaians that the policy would not be canceled under an NDC government.
“It’s never true that a vote for the NDC means the cancellation of Free SHS,” he said. “We will make it better because parents are now paying more than when it wasn’t free.”
With a clear message for the electorate, Mr. Mahama stressed that the NDC offers a vision for Ghana’s future that focuses on sustainable development, economic recovery, and the restoration of the country’s former glory.
“The NDC is the right choice for Ghana’s development,” he concluded.
