Former President John Mahama has once again affirmed his commitment and willingness to review the appointments made by the executive Arm of government when elected into office in 2024.
The NDC Presidential hopeful who is seeking to lead the party in the upcoming 2024 Elections stated at a fundraising forum held in UPSA in Accra on Wednesday that, the country must take keen interest and effect changes in appointment made by successive governments from 1992 till date.
Mr. Mahama further remark that, if the suggestion is thought through carefully the Nation will be on the path of sustainable growth and development and also minimise reported cases of human abuse as well as avoidable infractions of the 1992 constitution of Ghana.
Decoupling appointments made by the executive Arm of government have been a debate within the Nation in the past and many political actors are of the view that, reigniting national discussions to attract attention is the way to go.
Several government and legal brains have subjected the idea to disarm the executive from unduly making political appointments if elected into office as a dent in the constitution and retardation in development and infrastructure provision.
Mr. Mahama noted that , the abuse of power by especially the executive could be attributed to the excessive control and power which have been embbed in them by the rule book of the country.
He said is about time the nation prioritise discussions to review the constitution in order to reduce some of the powers by sitting Presidents as enshrined in the 1992 constitution of the republic.
The wantom abuse of state power, corruption at the seat of government and abuse of human rights by state actors are mostly blamed on politicians and the overwhelming powers which the constitution gives them.
Former President John Mahama also use the event to launch an app targeted to raise funds to support his election bid in both the NDC contest and main polls in 2024.
Some constitutional scholars have concur to the suggestions by Mr. Mahama to have certain provisions in the constitution revised and call for national dialogue to awakening the spirit of sound democratic governance.
Seasoned Politicians and Civil society organisations and heads of non political establishments graced the event at the University of Professional Studies in Accra.
President John Mahama had earlier hinted to also scrap article 71 office holders whose emoluments seemed to be having a negative impact on the national purse on annual basis.
Though the former head of state has vowed to deal with expunge the said legislative and constitutional instruments from the constitution, some legal brains have also describe the move and argue that it is highly undoable due to the entretch nature of provisions in the constitution. The debate rages on and the end will justify the means.
